The
idea initially wasn't necessarily even to make an album. I had a few songs
that, in my opinion, weren't for the band. It wasn't that we tried them.
The initiation of it was me starting to record some of these tunes just to
document 'em, and then it grew up into something much more. It was really
awesome fun, with all these different people that I admired that hadn't
been on records with me before. So it became it became its own thing, a
sort of sabbatical. |
Afterglow is firmly within the Mclachlan
signature sound--a softly tuneful, mildly atmospheric blend of classic
singer/songwriterism and a touch of vaguely dreamy alternative pop, all
shined and immaculately produced...(Allmusic.com)

The sullen undertone in the six songs on
Rachael Yamagata's "EP" (Private Music, BMG) comes from the
tearful scratch in her voice, from her sparse piano or guitar, and from
lyrics that sketch one disintegrating relationship after another. Despite
echoes of Fiona Apple and Beth Orton, Ms. Yamagata promises her own
intriguing distress. (New York Times)

Kings
of Leon
'Youth And Young Manhood' is an classic
debut. Fresh, vibrant and wiry, it might reactivate a template pioneered
by The Strokes (and whatever anyone says, the similarities are too obvious
to ignore), but it does so with a defiant twist and personality of its
own. We're talking more Creedence Clearwater Revival than The Velvet
Underground, but there's nothing wrong with that. (NME.com)

Belle
& Sebastian
Faced
with becoming a '90s nostalgia act, these founders of the school of overly
precious chamber pop try stretching out. With their slightly more
aggressive tempos and beaming harmonies, even hints of falsetto, songs
like ''Roy Walker'' and ''If She Wants Me'' have moments of genuine
beauty. But the smiley-face vibe and quasi-ironic lyrics -- call it shiny,
semi-happy people -- only make the band seem more coy and arch than
ever.(Entertainment Weekly) |

Spearhead
Michael
Franti is a bit late to the Gulf War II protest party. But what the
Spearhead leader misses in timing, he makes up for in attitude and soul,
infusing the dozen tracks on his band's fourth album with a joyous
celebration of life that pulverizes bullets with positive vibes. Lashing
the street poetry of Gil Scott-Heron and the soulful bounce of Marvin Gaye
to a heavy dose of sunshiny, hippie sentiment, the album's vibe is summed
up by the title song's egalitarian chorus, "Even our worst enemies .
. . deserve music."

Three
Days Grace
Three
Days Grace, a Toronto-based trio originally from Norwood, Ontario, Canada,
(pop.
1500) has used their small town upbringing as inspiration and produced the
big
town sound of their self-titled debut, a potent hard-edged rock album,
filled
with
melodic choruses and lyrics that explore the darker side of humanity.
There’s
something
enlightening about growing up in a town so small that you can bear
witness
to indiscretions. Maybe that’s why Three Days Grace believes they can
see
through the façade that many people hide behind.

depressed pop--like if you combined Fiona Apple's angst-ridden tunes with
Michelle Branch's catchy guitar rhythms." Katy, 16, says she refuses to
"label my music or put it in any genre." (YM)

Galactic
Galactic's first studio album in three years
is produced by legendary Dan "The Automator" Makamura. Already a
major force in concert, with Ruckus, the band has fully captured its vision
in the studio! From Galactic's earliest
incarnation as New Orleans' forward-thinking distillers of the city's
musical heritage to its current status as a beloved, intelligent fun
machine, the band has taken the astonishing range of stylistic stimuli it
has absorbed over the years from jazz, soul, and blues to hard rock, hip-hop
and electronic music and fused it into its own thang.

40 Below
Summer
Combining
a unique mix of raw energy and an acute sense of melody, 40 Below Summer
return with The Mourning After, a passionate album of power and
ingenuity. Produced by David Bendeth, The Mourning After illustrates the
band's talent of merging the sonically brutal with the
beautiful...connecting brutal riffs to strong melodies.
